Floor Scrubbers: Tips for Prolonged Battery Life

Automatic floor scrubbers often depend on large, rechargeable batteries as a power source. Similar to the battery of your smartphone or tablet, you’ll want to do your best to prolong the overall life expectancy of the battery for as long as possible.

Fortunately, there are many simple steps you can take to extend the battery life of automatic floor scrubbers. With that in mind, here are a few tips you should add to your maintenance routine:

Aim for Corrosion-Free Batteries

Over time, you may begin to see corrosion forming on the battery top and terminals. In such cases, use a strong solution of baking soda and water to scrub away corrosion. Using a wire brush to clean battery posts and connections is also recommended.

Check Fluid Levels

Prior to charging, you may want to check the fluid level of each battery cell. It is not advisable to charge a battery if the fluid does not slightly cover the battery plates. Similarly, do not charge a battery with too much fluid as this can cause the acid to leak.

Charge the Battery Properly

In general, you’ll only want to recharge the battery of an automatic floor scrubber if you’ve used the machine for 30 minutes or more. Otherwise, you’re wasting a valuable charge cycle. On the other hand, it’s best to avoid completely draining a battery and leaving it “dead” for long periods of time. This may lead to acid leaks that can ruin both your machine and your flooring.
